The Raging Reedy River Falls!

The Reedy River Falls Park is a place we visit often in Greenville....for walks, to feed the ducks, visit the childrens' garden, sip coffee, listen to music, take pictures, have a picnic, and on and on. It is such a wonderful place here in Greenville! I usually see these falls at least once a week, if not more, and have NEVER seen them this massive and roaring! We have had a lot of rain over the past few days and it was just awesome to see and hear them this morning on our walk! I just had to take a few shots and share them with you...

Bittersweet

Blake's last day of school is this Friday! I continue to be amazed at his progress and more than pleased with the experience we have had with the Greenville public schools. Today I had an end of school meeting with his teacher to discuss extended school year (a.k.a Summer School), which he does NOT qualify for. That is actually a good thing because that means he continually shows progress and demonstrates what he has learned even after a break or weekend. He would only go to school in the summer if he regressed. Blake is already enrolled at the same Mother's Morning Out program as Dane. They will both go on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer which means Blake will be in a "typical" preschool setting all summer! It will be both fun and challenging for him to keep him on top of his game when off from school. So, this the sweet part...a celebration of Blake's first experiences at school and a great report from his teacher!

Now for the bitter part. It has been decided that the teacher and classroom he is currently a part of will NOT be at the same school next year. Greenville schools have built a new child development center, which is wonderful, but it is about 20 minutes from our house. The school he currently attends is 5 minutes away. But, distance does not matter at all to me. He will likely not be able to stay with Ms. Ruthie and her classroom set-up, which he has obviously thrived in. We will not find out any details until we receive a letter this summer. So, we just wait. I had a great discussion with Ms. Ruthie, his current teacher, today. She and the entire preschool team all know and agree that Blake is in the perfect setting and that he does best in the environment that he currently has. So, hopefully that means they will seek that same environment and maybe even place him with Ms. Ruthie next year. We can only hope. As for now, Blake may be placed at a number of possible schools (not necessarily the new child development center) next year. More information about this to come as I receive it...

Mommy Therapy

Play time at the Murphy home!
Happy Camille!

Whee! Sullivan enjoying her new swing!

Dane & Camille discussing the playdate...

I love playdates! Probably because they are like therapy for me. The time the mommies and children get to share together is so wonderful. Sullivan was excited to share her new swing set with everyone, and we were even more excited to get to play on it! Some of our playdate buddies were not there this time, but Dane sure had fun playing with his girls :) Camille's brother, Xander, was busy exploring the yard and was too fast for me to capture a picture! Maybe next time...which luckily isn't too far off! Thanks friends for the fun times we have every week!

Bless His Heart!

Today Blake went to the cardiologist for his 3-year check up. A little late, but it took several months just to get the appointment! They checked his blood pressure, pulses and did an echocardiogram. The physician looked at me and said "consider Blake's heart condition cured." Yeah! What a blessing! There are so many children with and without Down Syndrome who have to have multiple heart surgeries, so I feel very lucky and appreciate everything the wonderful physicians, nurses and surgeons did for us at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

The cardiologist mentioned that some recent studies have shown SOME individuals with Down Syndrome that had the same condition as Blake develop a different heart problem during their adolescent years. So, he recommended a follow-up in 10 years, which I think is amazing! He said Blake is able to do anything he wants without any limitations and does not require antibiotics for visits to the dentists. It sure is wonderful to be able to think of Blake's congenital heart defect in this light rather than how we were feeling at this time in 2006...his surgery was on July 6th of that year. As for now, I am celebrating this great news!

Ladies' Man

Most of you are aware that 5th graders are lined up on the sidewalk along the carpool line at Blake's elementary school to greet and/or help kids to class. The same select boys and girls do this every morning, so they all know who Blake is and have been getting to know him. I had to share with you that for the past week or so girls have been fighting over who will get to walk Blake from the car to class. Apparently he is quite the ladies' man...

P is for Progress

Since Blake started public school shortly after his third birthday in February I have been in awe at the new skills he displays every single day. I thought I would take a moment to brag a little because I am such a proud mommy! Here are some of his recent accomplishments...
  • Recognizes and verbalizes letters B, D, E, I, K, and O
  • Semi-sings the alphabet with me. The best is at the end when he belts out "ME!" when you sing "next time won't you sing with..."
  • Recognizes his name in print
  • "Singing" along to songs on C.D.'s and videos (e.g., inserts words/sounds at the correct time or anticipates them and says them right before)
  • Recognizes and verbalizes colors Blue, Green & Red
  • Counts from 1 to 7
  • Verbalizes his teacher's name, Mrs. Ruthie
  • The most EXCITING thing! He has increased the words he says from around 10 when he started public school to over 30 now! And I feel like he says something new every day!

It still amazes me to drop him off in the carpool line and see him walk in with a 5th grade friend. He gets so excited when I tell him it is time to go to school. He will usually say "cool," then "Ms. Ruthie" (his teacher) and runs to the door to leave. We are SO blessed to have such a great situation right now...a great and supportive teacher, administration and school. I hope everyday he gets to return to the same school and situation next year. Thanks for allowing me to brag :)
